Get a little learning in before the show! The Annapolis School of Seamanship is offering 3-hour interactive workshops on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings just before show opening time. Workshop participants will receive in-depth instruction in the subject of their choice, as well as many extras.
The $85 workshop fee includes: Two days admission to the show, a 3-hour intensive workshop, instructional take away items, a $25 gift certificate for classes at Annapolis School of Seamanship and more. (More than a $150 value!) These workshops are different and more in-depth than the free seminars and demos taking place during the show.
Marine Diesel Fuel Systems
It is often said that 95% of Diesel engine failures are fuel or fuel system related. In this three-hour, interactive workshop, John Martino of Annapolis School of Seamanship will go through operating principles and anatomy of the a marine diesel fuel systems and then on to system maintenance and common failures. Time will be taken to address the pros and cons of fuel additives and polishing systems for microbial growth, lubricity, and cetane concerns.
Docking & Close Quarters Maneuvering
Most anxiety in boating comes from worries about docking and close quarters maneuvering. Whether you are operating an inboard or outboard, single screw or twin, there are some basic tricks with regard to wind, current, and line handling that can make you look like a pro. This three hour workshop is for boaters of ALL skill levels and offers hands-on training, live demonstration and lecture to improve your skills around the dock. Couples are encouraged to attend together as effective crew communication between couples can break down quickly.
Troubleshooting Diesel Start Failure
When your Diesel won't start it may be more than just inconvenient. More often than not, the situation can be resolved within a few minutes. Learn the techniques and tricks of the trade that delivery captains and Diesel technicians use to quickly troubleshoot start failures. Topics include: the engine start circuit, use of multimeter, remote start switches, battery sulfation and load testing, use of starting aids, exhaust back pressure, compression and fuel delivery.
Marine Corrosion, Bonding & Lightning Protection
Corrosion in the marine environment is virtually unavoidable. But there measures you can do to protect and extend the life of your boat and equipment by applying some basic principles. In this three-hour workshop, ABYC Master Technician, Raymond Wiedower of Annapolis School of Seamanship pans the causes and remedies for marine corrosion, how bonding systems work, and the mysteries of stray current. He will also discuss some measures you could take to help mitigate the devastating effects of lightning strikes.
Electronic Navigation & RADAR
For centuries mariners never really know where they were. Nowadays we not only know our exact position, but the world of modern electronics can tell us who and what is near us, how close they will come, what weather is over the horizon and will even steer the boat home. With such sophistication in the electronic world some training is necessary to make sense of it all. This workshop will tackle the alphabet soup of modern navigational electronics and offer interactive exercises on RADAR screen interpretation and the use of chart plotter technology to enhance the skipper's situational awareness.
Handling Onboard Emergencies
Emergencies come quickly and unexpectedly on the water. Most are the result of a chain of events that starts before the boat even leaves the dock. Handling such a situation onboard involves breaking the chain at any point. Former Coastie and instructor, Matt Benhoff of Annapolis School of Seamanship will run through some typical emergency scenarios and how to prevent them as well as respond to them should they happen to you. Hands-On exercises and demonstrations with inflatable life preservers and training fire extinguishers are just a few of the interactive features of this workshop.
